Access to Your Free Credit Report

Whether you’re working to re-establish your credit, have been a victim of identity theft, or are just interested in knowing your credit history, you can obtain your credit bureau report online - for free.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion - to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.

How to order:

Information contained on your credit report:

  • Open and closed accounts.
  • Balances and limits.
  • Who's inquired about you lately.
  • On time and late payments.
  • Current and former addresses.
  • Employment history.
  • Public records, bankruptcies, judgments.
  • Items under investigation.
  • Consumer statement (your comments regarding disputed items).

Why you should monitor your credit report:

  • To make sure the information contained in the report is accurate before you request a loan.
  • To guard against identity theft where someone uses your personal information, such as your name, Social Security Number, or credit card number, to commit fraud.

Tips for ordering your free credit reports:

  • Order one free report from each of the 3 consumer reporting companies (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) every four months.
  • By staggering your requests over a 12-month period (i.e., one report every 4 months), you can keep a close eye on your information throughout the year.
  • Beware of "imposter" websites.
  • You are entitled under the law to a free annual credit report; however, only one website is authorized to fill orders for a free annual credit report.
  • The authorized website is www.annualcreditreport.com. Only use this website and avoid others that appear to offer "free" reports.
